I visited the Santa Ana Unified School District, as part of my study leave, in 2002. It was here I shadowed Rosemary Ruthven, a District Curriculum Specialist, working in the area of literacy.
Rosemary had developed many programs to assist teachers implement the California State Board’s Adopted Standards. She had also produced a number of important publications for the District, still currently in use.
Rosemary was quite clearly extremely knowledgeable and competent in her role as Consultant. From watching her interaction with her colleagues in the classroom it was clear that she was well respected by them.
I gained many valuable insights into curriculum strategies and classroom management as a result of the time spent with Rosemary.

Rosemary has highly developed skills in terms of children's literacy. She has run a number of Parent Training Workshops at Beachside Family Centre with great feedback from participants. She did a brilliant job in not only imparting information in a user-friendly way but also demonstrating specific strategies using the children present. Rosemary has also been a long term member of the Peninsula START (Sit Together And Read for Ten minutes a day) Project where she has been a valuable consultant on early literacy and has offered financial sponsorship for the early literacy program “Let's Read”.

It has been a privilege to know and work with Rosemary Ruthven for my entire teaching career at Washington Elementary School in Santa Ana, California. Rosemary began there as a 3rd grade teacher and immediately became a mentor to me. She is intelligent, articulate, and intuitive in dealing with student needs. She also works well with others and is extremely supportive of her colleagues.
Rosemary is the type of person who sees what needs to be done and does it. An example of this is when she developed a “History of Santa Ana” curriculum for the third grade because when she started there, there really wasn’t one. This included a book, many lesson plans, and even a play.
Soon after, Rosemary became the School Reading Specialist and set into emotion an after-school and vacation intervention program for our struggling students. She was such an asset; speaking regularly at our weekly meetings and helping to train many of our teachers.
When Rosemary left, to take a job with the district, she was greatly missed. Her work and her methods continued to be used in our school but her warm, caring ways, her positive attitude, and her amazing character can’t be replaced.
Rosemary is an outstanding and dedicated professional who enriches the lives of those she touches.

The time for my son's entry to school was fast approaching and he had not shown the slightest interest in picking up a pencil to write. I had not pushed him to do it. Being an educator myself, I feared turning him off his school work entirely.
I heard about Rosemary's programme and thought it might be the right fit for a four year old boy who would rather be outside running and playing! What made it work was that my son was learning, but did not know it! Rosemary made it fun to learn, and focused on reading as well as writing. He always looked forward to his lesson and still often talks about Rosemary and her wonderful techniques.

Thank you very much for working with Cyndrella. She was able to read and write because of you. Especially when reading she had this technique of reading words in syllables. I could see her progress when you were helping her. She looked forward to being with you every Thursday.
Thank you once more for helping Cyndrella.
Many thanks,
Laizah
